Lecture: Ideas, craft and context

This week’s lecture offers insights into how different individuals approach the process of visualising and developing ideas in various creative fields.

Christoph Miller (Offshore):

  • Christoph emphasises the collaborative nature of idea development, drawing inspiration from the concept of a "third mind" when two
    people share ideas.

  • He and his partner use different techniques in their creative process. They begin with research and visual research, collecting references
    for various elements like shapes, colours, typography, and layout.

  • They also sketch ideas, with Christoph relying more on written ideas and digital testing, while his partner Isobel prefers hand sketches.

  • The creative process is dynamic and complex, with constant exchange of ideas and sketches, resulting in the generation of
    new and unexpected concepts.

Vince Frost (Frost Collective):

  • Vince finds inspiration in the world around him, including the city of Sydney and its beaches.

  • He believes inspiration is everywhere, and it's a matter of being open, aware, and receptive to ideas.

  • Meeting clients and immersing himself in projects also inspires him, as it leads to opportunities for creative problem-solving.

Sam Bompas (Bompas & Parr):

  • Sam emphasises the importance of research and maintaining an extensive library from which to draw ideas.

  • His team encourages thinking about ideas before a formal brief is received.

  • The best ideas are often simple and concise, making them easy to communicate and share.

  • Sam believes in reaching out to people who inspire him, even if it means finding their email addresses or contact information.

James Stringer (Werkflow):

  • James' approach to idea development in gaming is influenced by social realist cinema, particularly in terms of themes, aesthetics, and sound.

  • He looks at video games like "Everyone's Gone to Rapture" for realistic portrayals and explores the use of mini-games for
    examining emotional states and histories.

  • Collaborations with artists and musicians are essential to the development of his games.

Each individual in this text has unique sources of inspiration, techniques, and references that inform their creative processes, demonstrating
the diversity of approaches in various creative fields.


Research task: Mood board

This mood board is the foundation of my final piece for this brief. It is an abstract timeline of live music production. This timeline focuses on three main sections. Foundation, focussing on the first-ever outdoor live shows and the apparatus used to build such structures. Current, focussing on today’s live industry. And Future, looking into what the possibilities are for live entertainment in the years to come. Each of these sections will comprise its own individual space.
