Week 8: Visual Writing - Design and Critique

Research Task:

For this week’s research task, I have chosen to review the book "Diddly Squat" by Jeremy Clarkson. "Diddly Squat" focuses on Jeremy’s recent farming endeavours and newfound passion. It is a very light-hearted and not-so-serious read, as evident from the styling of its front cover featuring playful illustrations and muted colours with a sans-serif font. Additionally, the story is quite fun and humorous, showing Jeremy taking on a new role as a farmer, not a journalist.

The book centres on a year at the farm Diddly Squat and serves as a tribute to the people and friends Jeremy has made there, as well as to farming and farmers.

“This book is a tribute to Kaleb, Charlie, Ellen, Kevin, Gerald and, of course, Lisa.” (Clarkson, J. 2021)

Regarding materials, the choice of paper seems deliberate, striking a balance between durability and luxury. The pages are sturdy enough to withstand multiple reads yet smooth to the touch, enhancing the overall reading experience.

The rhythm of the publication mirrors Clarkson's style: fast-paced and unapologetically bold.

As for the choice of binding, "Diddly Squat" opts for paperback. It's a book built to last.

In essence, "Diddly Squat" not only delivers Clarkson's trademark humour but also pays careful attention to the tactile elements that make reading an immersive experience.
